Family Board Games
63Family Game Night
We as a family love to play board games together. There are some easy and not so mind numbing ones out there that the whole family can play. Family game night is a great way to spend quality time.
Board games help teach many social skills. I have noticed that my kids have learned how to wait their turn. I like the fact that it helps my kids learn to be gracious winners, and losers. Games teach some reading and counting skills, especially how to read and follow directions. Some require hand eye coordination. Others make you try to use strategy to stay in the game.
Most of the games (except Xbox 360) that I have listed are very affordable, and offer hours of enjoyment.
Jishaku
This game is labeled for 8 and up, but my 5 year old can play it. It is small and portable. It is several strategy games in one. It uses magnets that look like rocks. Adults like to play this game too.
UNO Attack
A twist on the traditional UNO card game. This edition has more action. Recommended age is 7 and up. My 5 year old can play this. UNO is fun for any age.
Monopoly Junior
This game gets played a lot at our house. My husband loved to play the regular edition when he was a kid. I unfortunately never learned to play. The Monopoly Junior comes in several editions like Disney and Dinosaurs. Recommended age is 5 to 8 years. Adults like to play too.
Trouble
There is the classic version. There are several editions. We have the Dora the Explorer Edition. Age is 5 to 9 years. I like to play it with the kids. It's easy but not too boring. It can get a little monotonous if you play with only two players.
Xbox 360
My husband and son play with this most. My daughter and I like to play the game Sing. I am not a big fan of video games and I have to watch to make sure my kids don't play too long or too often.
Operation
It's a classic. Fun game for everyone. There are several different editions such as Sponge Bob (we have the Sponge Bob edition). For ages 8 to 15 my daughter is 5 and has no problem if she is playing with someone who is a good reader.
scene it?
I like this game as it tests reading skills and memory. It is a really fun interactive game for the whole family. There are many different editions out there such as Disney and Twilight to name a few. The game is a combination of board game and video game. It is played by using the DVD player and remote while moving pieces around on a board.

My guys are young adults now, but I can tell you the electronic games are their favorites still.
Scene it has brought lots of good times too.
Pat writes - my kids are grown and live abroad. However, when they are at home they like to play a board game based on the London Underground. My daughter has found a similar American game called Ticket to Ride, based on rail networks.
Tammy-
You can't beat these games. One Christmas, after severe storms,we had no electricity for 3 days-so to firelight and candles ,we played board games round the clock. When the lights came back on,the kids all moaned with disappointment!
Tammy, I grew upo playing Monopoly with my family6 and I still love it! Bought a set again earlier this year and my daughter is now getting hooked as well.

Hi Tammy, I love this hub on family board games. We do family night every Friday and board games are always a hit with the kids.
Tammy - playing board games with your children is so much fun. Even when they are somewhat grown up. Every once in a while, we drag out the Monopoly or Scrabble. And somehow, Christmas night has become a time for a mass board game, one of the ones that you can play with a lot of people, like Cranium.
The Wisconsin Zoltak's are Scrabblers, though my wife gets mad cuz I'm a word guy. We still play seasonally. My wife and daughter play Monopoly but I'm burned out, I must've played that game a thousand times when I was a kid haha.
Thanks for the heads up on Jishaku, I've never heard of that one, is it like chess Tammy?
We'll be eating a giant turkey in Milwaukee today then it's time to play some football (after we watch the Pack destroy the Lions of course haha)Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to the Lochmans from the Zoltak's in Wisconsin!

My kids always ask for new Nintendo DS games for birthdays and Christmas. This year, though, I decided NOT to buy any electronic games. Instead, I bought the 6-year old Trouble and Hungry Hippos. Both kids will enjoy those. I think I might also buy Operation and there's another new game called Pop The Pig (I think?) that they both want. Board games are great fun!
