International Nurses Day
National Nurses Week begins on May 6th and ends on May 12th which also happens to be Florence Nightingale's birthday. International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12th of each year.
This day has been celebrated since 1965. It's celebrated to remember all of the contributions and sacrifices nurses make to society. Nursing is still considered a low-paid and thankless job.
Nurses around the world are responsible for advancements in healthcare. They work on the frontline, directly responsible for patient care and outcome. International Nurses day is a day to commemorate the importance of their vocation. Healthcare facilities, nursing homes, medical clinics, Doctor's offices all have activities for nurses, get togethers, gift-giving, seminars, banquets, and other communal events.
Keep the date in mind and remember to let the nurses in your life know how much you appreciate them. I will be letting my fellow nurses know.
The Office Nurse
Great gifts for the office Nurses. Nurses love pens! We use them and lose them they are indispensable. I like these because they are colorful and fun. You can give one to every nurse in your office or when you make rounds. These are very reasonably priced.
The pen set may be a bit pricier but you could give that to your personal nurse or your home-health nurse that comes to the house. A home health nurse would really need these pens they do lots of writing too and these come in a nice case.
Hey Docs and Administrators book marks are a great price in bulk to pass out to all the nurses when you make rounds at the hospital. I never have enough book marks. We are always reading and catching up on the latest nursing and medical news. We also like to read other things too.
Inspirational Reading
Most nurses and myself love to read. At least when we aren't busy studying for a class or trying to get some higher degree. These are some inspirational books for nurses. Sometimes we need a little pick-me-up or even a kick-in-the-pants. There are days when inspiration is not to be found.
Nurses need inspiration and we need to know we are appreciated. We don't hear it very often people treat nurses like they are just servants. We are not servants we have degrees. Please think about that the next time you have an encounter with a nurse.
Nurses also have lives outside of the hospital. We are mothers, wives, partners, homemakers, home educators, writers, friends, artists, athletes, fathers, and the list can go on and on. Just keep in mind we are people too.
Great Bags
For the home health nurse. These bags are practical and light-weight. Lots of pockets to organize those home health essentials. Even if you aren't a home health nurse these are great for work in the hospital too. We always have things like stethoscopes and scissors and other gadgets that need to be toted back and forth.
Also some fashionable insulated lunch bags. If you know a home health nurse you know they spend a lot of time in the car. These are great to keep snacks, and drinks cold. They're pretty cute too. I like the brown and green one. Hospital food gets really old really fast so the lunch totes are great for any nurse.
Nurses have a lot to carry back and forth to work. A good bag even an insulated one doubles as a great place for lunch but can double as a tote for all the other things. We can use them for other things too, not just work.
Gadgets
Gadgets for the home health nurse at a great price too. Scissors are the gadget that we use the most and lose the most. We use scissors for just about everything. Scissors can be engraved they come in different styles and colors.
Pen lights are indispensable and we lose them a lot too. No need to have an expensive one most last a year or two. We use them at night so we don't wake up patients and we use them to assess patients too. We need them to see into dark places.
A good stethoscope is a must-have for any nurse and they make a great gift too. Stethoscopes come in many styles and many colors. I recommend a Littmann brand stethoscope they are sturdy and the price range is low to high. I have had my stethoscope for about 6 years now. We don't use them as much lately as we isolate and screen all patients admitted to the ICU.
Pen lights, scissors and a good stethoscope are essential for any nurse.
Personal Gifts for that Special Nurse
Some personal gifts you might want to give the nurse in your life to show them how much you appreciate them. The silver and crystal bracelet is a good price and would be a great gift. We do get to go out and have a social life.
My favorite is the "Nurses Rock" tote bag, because Nurses really do rock! We always need tote bags. This can double as a shopping bag or diaper bag. I am a sucker for purses and bags. This is even neutral enough for guys to use. The color is great too.
This lanyard is really nice. A bit pricey but would be a great gift for your favorite nurse. We need these for our id badges and keys and pens and stuff. This would be the envy of all the other nurses. This one has cute little do-dads on it. When a nurse looks like she cares about how she looks and looks confident it makes patients feel confident in us.

Hug a nurse when ever you can is my motto...wait I do every day cause I married one...smiles...be on the lookout for a hugger, that will be me.
Blessings and Thank you for all you do....HUGS
Nurses rock, especially you!
I appreciate you nurses. You are really unsung heroes. You do things that we can't and many won't. Thank you Tammy.
I won't to hug a nurse too! I've actually tried many times but nurses wear those really fast comfortable shoes and they can split it and git it! Let me know if you see some slow nurses!
Thank you for your work on the front lines. There is no profession I respect and admire more than nursing. I appreciate this Hub, too.
Excellent hub. I did not know there was a nurses day and rightly so it should be. So its not a surprise really we have one. I give you an advance Happy Nurses day Tammy!
Well I feel a comment is necessary. I will keep it short though. :-) First you have done an outstanding job of presenting gift suggestions along with Amazon products. Also acknowledging all nurses is a great reminder to say thank you for a job well done. I imagine you receive a lot of appreciation. OK, I think that was short but sweet, right? lol
Glad you told me - I can do something special for my daughter!
Happy Nurses Day to you and all your friends. You deserve the best! Nice Hub,
Sage
As a nurse I have to say terrific article! I would like it regardless of my profession but it is nice to see nurses honored because we work hard and deserve some recognition. Great hub!
nice suggestions for amazon sale Tam, but most of all it is nice to know about Nurses day, I have lots of nurse friends here and I can greet them now and have the options to buy those gifts. Tam, I miss reading your hubs, Take care, Maita
GO GIRL---YOU ARE THE BEST--GOD BLESS !
My mother is a nurse and I had no idea there was a special day for them. I really appreciate your hub, thank you! I learned something new today and I love that!
:) Great Hub
When I decided to be a nurse, it was supposed to be my "meantime" job while I decided what kind of artist I would be--then my REAL job would begin. I swear, I never knew an occupation could absorb so much of your identity. I still can't get over it sometimes. I've taken as much as 2 months off work, and am planning a 6 month to 1 year leave starting in October. But if I actually had to quit what I do for real, I think I would cry all day. I know it's not the line of work for everyone, but it's definitely the right fit for me. Thanks for the hub...how was your Nurses' Day? or week? My hospital combined Nurses Week and Hospital Week together--some combination of "thanks nurses! and let's all celebrate fiscal responsibility!" Lame. They give us gym bags though ;-).
my brother is a nurse and i am a witness on how difficult his work is, yet, he looks like he is very satisfied. cheers to all nurses.
Hi Tammy-What a great collection of gifts for nurses you have here-well done.Hope you are keeping well with all your endeavors:)
What a great hub and you had me laughing as well!!! I was trying to count just how many pen lights and good pens I have lost over the years!! And it is sad as well because some of the pens were gifts and I really loved them - like most nurses I do have a favourite pen. But now I keep them at home instead of work.
I also liked the paragraph on 'nurses being treated like servants' - how very true! Thankfully most of the patients and their families are genuine and nice people, as usual it is the small minority that cause the problems.
Loved this hub - voted up!!
